LINCOLN IN THE BARDO is a portrait of grief told in the most unconventional format. Now, I feel I cannot work until I tell someone about this book. Despite already being at my desk at work, I needed to get through those last nine pages. I finished reading LINCOLN IN THE BARDO less than five minutes ago. In his short story collection TENTH OF DECEMBER, Saunders demonstrates clearly that he can master and twist every rule to his will, but in his first novel, LINCOLN IN THE BARDO, he takes this a step further, breaking every single rule in the most beautiful and poignant way possible. As a young writer, I was often told that you needed to master all the rules of writing before you could go about breaking them, and this statement is illustrated perfectly in the work of George Saunders.
